Aceh Books (KITLV). Leiden University Libraries Digital Collections. https://digitalcollections.universiteitleiden.nl/acehbooks . Compiled and digitized by the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), this collection was an effort to preserve Acehnese works from the colonial period to the post-Independence era after the 2004 Aceh Tsunami occured. The works included books with themes such as colonial manuals, hikayats, kitabs, literature, memoirs, Aceh War history, culture, and Islam. The books in the collection were written in various languages, of which were Indonesian, Dutch, and Acehnese.

The collection covers the years from 1919 to 1931, which would be good in understanding the Arabic diaspora and the Islamic community’s viewpoints in the Dutch East Indies.Bandera-Islam. GPA. https://gpa.eastview.com/crl/sea/newspapers/bnsm. This collection holds the newspaper, Bandera-Islam, which was the media wing of the famous nationalist-Islamic group, Sarekat Islam. The newspaper was based in Yogyakarta, but also had publications in other cities in Java and cover the years from 1924 to 1927. With key SI figures such as H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto, Agus Salim, and Soerjopranoto as redactors, the newspaper provides a valuable insight into SI thinking, viewpoints of events, and their Islamic vision within the broader nationalist movement.

This collection holds publication from the nationalist political society Boedi Oetomo from 1920 to 1924 in Yogyakarta. The collection helps to understand early Indonesian nationalists intelligentsia, and their thoughts and visions of an independent Indonesia.

The founder, Haji Misbach, was a key advocate of the union between Islamic and socialist thinking. The newspaper was a mixed language edition, part-Dutch, part-Malay, and was under Dutch redaction.

This collection of photographs were taken by Claire Holt during her various visits to Indonesia, primarily in 1930 -1938. The photographs documented various aspects of indigenous tradition, with a particular emphasis on the dance cultures of Java and Bali. The photographs also included traditional costumes, instruments, and various other cultural material.

This collection holds publications from a Peranakan newspaper that covered the late colonial period, from 1914 to 1942, just before the Japanese invasion. The newspaper is based in Malang, East Java, and gives a good sense of colonial society and events specific to East Java.

The collection was digitized by the National Library of Australia and funded by the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra. The archives collects newspapers from Berita Repoeblik, within the timeframe of the early proclamation into 1946, which also gives insights to early Indonesian government structures, laws, and government notices/maklumat.

Some of the themes found were the capitulation of Japanese forces, Allied transitional forces in the Indies, the Netherlands-Indies Civil Administration, and various activities and weaponry of KNIL during their re-entry to Indonesia.

This collection of photographs were taken by independent Dutch photographers who set forth to Indonesia in 1947. The photos, albums, and clippings revolves around various decolonization processes in Indonesia. One of the photographers stayed in Indonesia until 1953.

This archive collects editions from North Sulawesi’s newspaper, Pelita, from 1947-1949. This newspaper gives a good record on local societal opinions on the Indonesian relations and the dynamics and tensions between the nationalist revolution with those in the outer islands. This newspaper was also in fact testament to the short-lived existence of federalist Republic of Indonesia, with editions showing a stamp from the State of East Indonesia’s Ministry of Information.

While this collection contains various photographs from various De Spaarnestad photographers, it also contains amateur and graphic images of the Dutch police actions in Indonesia from 1947-1949.

It was written by the four curators: Harm Stevens, Amir Sidharta, Bonnie Triyana, and Marion Anker.

A digital collection of the Indonesian Communist Party’s (PKI) newspaper Harian Rakyat. Though the collection is still a work in progress, in which only works from 1951-1952 were added, the collection gives a good sense of communist journalistic activities and viewpoints within Indonesia, particularly after the events in Madiun, 1948.
Java Bode. GPA. https://gpa.eastview.com/crl/sea/newspapers/jvbd. This collection stores publications from the Dutch-run, Dutch-language newspaper, Java Bode, that was based in Jakarta. The papers, covering from 1955 to 1957, provides a valuable resource into the viewpoints and the concerns of the Dutch people that stayed even after the revolution. The newspaper cover important, Dutch-related matters, such as the negotiations and conflict over West Irian and ultimately the nationalization of Dutch enterprises in 1957 and the following Dutch ‘exodus’ that lead to the newspaper’s closure.

This collection contains magazine published and reserved for the army called Kawan Tentera. The collection only provides publications within the year 1950. Nevertheless, it is a good resource to understand army viewpoints in a post-revolutionary Indonesia that is still grappling with regional violence and transition from the federal RIS to unitary republicanism.

It provides archives, exhibitions, and podcasts from lived-experiences of the Moluccans. This is valuable to understand the events surrounding the Moluccans in Indonesian and Dutch history, such as the proclamation of the South Moluccan Republic (RMS) in 1950 and its aftermath.

An extensive collection of the newspaper, Sin Po, that was managed by Chinese-Indonesians from the colonial era to the post-revolutionary period and Soekarno’s guided democracy. The collection also includes Warta Bhakti’s collections, a short-lived left-wing newspaper, with active publications during Soekarno’s regime (1959-1965)
Soekarno, speeches. Yale University Library. https://collections.library.yale.edu/catalog/11787273. A clear documentation of Soekarno’s speeches during his visit to the United States in 1956. The speeches, both in English and German, were addressed to the U.S. Congress and the National Press Club and provides a glimpse of his vision of Indonesia and its relations with the U.S. during that time, before his consolidation of power in 1959.

A collection of summaries of reports and images of activities and events that the Australian Foreign Ministry undertook from 1973 - 1988. The documents are relevant because they contain plenty of traces of Australian foreign interaction with Indonesia under Soeharto’s regime.

The collection includes publication from the army-backed newspaper, Berita Yudha, from 1965-1966. The newspaper was founded over army fears of a communist-media dominance, hence they funded Berita Yudha. The newspaper was also an important propaganda machine in countering the communist newspaper, Harian Rakyat, in winning hearts and minds after the events of 1965 and 1966.

The collection stores digitized documents from global solidarity movements that supported Timor Leste’s struggle against Indonesian colonialism. This included photographs, newspapers, and key documents from 1975 to 1999.

This is an e-book version of documented photographs taken during the events of the Indonesian reformation in 1998, marking the end of Soeharto’s dictatorship. The photobook was compiled by AJI, and contained key pictures such as the student-led protests, police and army repression, and the violence and destruction that ensued during that time.
Indonesia Raya : Dari Rakjat, Oleh Rakjat untuk Rakjat 1952 - 1974. Khazanah Pustaka Nusantara. Perpusnas RI. https://khastara.perpusnas.go.id/koleksi-digital/detail/?catId=409688. The newspaper in the collection, Indonesia Raya, was founded by renowned journalist and writer, Mochtar Lubis. The paper was an ardent critic of both the Soekarno and the Soeharto government. The collection stores editions from 1952 to 1974, spanning the two regimes and enduring banning and suspensions from both regimes. The newspaper was then forced to disband after allegations of stirring public opinion and causing the Malari protests in 1974.

This collection of the newspaper, Merdeka, provides information of not only the Soekarno era, but also Soeharto’s. While the collection provides scans of documents from as far as 1950, this newspaper survived the regime change, where in 1970, they still released editions, becoming a valuable resource to look into Soeharto’s early years in power

This issue gave an account of the turmoils in Indonesia surrounding the events of 1965-1966 through an American journalistic lens, with obvious praise to the anti-communist Soeharto.

WowShack. https://www.wowshack.com/. A pop-styled website that contains several important collections of images and videos sourced from other websites. The themes of the images ranged from Soekarno’s inauguration pictures and photos with foreign leaders, the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, colonial history, Soeharto-era Indonesia, and many others.
